Farms Fund Robots to Replace Migrant Fruit Pickers
Farms Fund Robots to Replace Migrant Fruit Pickers
From the article:
From the article:
- Vision Robotics, a San Diego company, is working on a pair of robots that would trundle through orchards plucking oranges, apples or other fruit from the trees. In a few years, troops of these machines could perform the tedious and labor-intensive task of fruit picking that currently employs thousands of migrant workers each season.

If the illegals are jobless perhaps they'll go back where they came from. They are not interested in improving their own countries, only in getting into ours'. Of course the main fault lies with the people who employ illegals, and buy goods produced with illegal labour.
We could use agricultural robots here in Europe, also. Spain produces a lot of fruits with illegals, whose living conditions are very poor. More and more are trying to get there, and we should take away their motivation to do so, so that they can focus on improving their own countries.

Yea right..
But who will then clean the streets, pick up your garbage, drive the bus..
Just remember that you may be also an immigrant to the land that you consider your own..
Just ask the native American what they think of you. And have the courage to accept the reality.

The robots will. Besides, a lot of the trash on the streets gets there when people _throw thrash on the street_, i.e. that's a self-caused problem.
And I didn't say anything about immigration, but about _illegal_ immigration. If the citizens of a nation deside to allow others to live there, they are welcome. Otherwise, get lost. And you are not an immigrant in the country where you were born, that is your homeland.

As a former orchard worker in Australia, I can tell you that anything that reduces our reliance on seasonal fruit pickers will be extremely welcome.
It's getting harder and harder to find people willing to do this work for the money that fruit growers can afford to pay. Bringing in immigrant labour from low wage countries is a short sighted solution (though one apparently favoured by the Howard govt) so roll on robot pickers..

With the 20% of Mexico living here, gone, there will be a lot less garbage, less traffic, less uninsured drivers, less crime, more freeway space, more water, more of all our natural resources. All we'll miss is the $1,000,000.00 each illegal costs American during a lifetime of required social services.
