Robot drives 200 miles

Carnegie Mellon's Sandstorm robot makes unprecedented 200-mile autonomous run

From the article:

Comments:
If this can even make it half way I'll be thoroughly impressed. As I recall no one made it pass 8 miles last time.

I wonder if Hans Moravec was involved at all. He does work at Carnegie Mellon, and his computer vision research seems relevant.

Big deal! It didn't 'drive' 200 miles -- it 'drove' 1.5 miles 131 times. This was more an 'endurance' test than a 'guidance' test. After completing the first lap, the on-board computer had enough sequential directional data to establish a precisely repeatable pattern without further external input -- that's why the real test is overland: every second a new test over new terrain. -- blzbob
